PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS AND ANALYSIS

Your Eagles at their Best

ISAIAH BERNARD (#15) - RECEIVER

The Eagles lined up at their own 20 yard line. Logan Scott (#4) lined up in the shotgun position keeping only one back in. The Eagles used a new triple stack wide left formation creating forced separation from the cornerback and safety. On the snap the running back went straight for the line to hold the linebackers in. Logan then threw a bullet to Isaiah Bernard (#15). The front wide receiver blocked the cornerback as the middle stack receiver went for the safety. These blocks neutralized the defenders and allowed Isaiah to run free until forced out at the Eagles’ 39 for a nice 19 yard gain. Great team blocking and running by the receiving corps.

TERRELL NEWBY (#34) - RUNNING BACK

DEVON LEE (#25) - RUNNING BACK

ANDREW CHEN (#64) - OFFENSIVE LINE

The Eagles lined up at their own 39 yard line.  Logan Scott (#4) lined up in the shotgun flanked by a running back on each side.  The left wide receiver Austin Barthel (#20) went in motion to the right to draw the cornerback.  On the snap Logan handed the ball to Terrell Newby (#34) who came from his right.  This gave him a front blocking back, Devon Lee (#25) to take on the linebacker. Devon hit him and allowed Terrell to cut inside.  While this was happening, Andrew Chen (#64), left tackle, started blocking on the 40 and drove the right defensive end back 11 yards before knocking him to the ground.  Between Devon and Andrew and the rest of the line moving Arroyo Grande back, Terrell was able to run for an 11 yard gain.

LOGAN SCOTT (#4) - QUARTERBACK

The Eagles lined up at the Arroyo Grande 36 yard line.  Logan Scott (#4) lined up under center with only Terrell Newby (#34) in the backfield.  Logan faked a handoff to Terrell and then looked to his right as he had two receivers going deep.  With pressure from his right he began rolling left.  He then saw that the deep patterns had left a huge open space to the 23 where the sole defender was in no-mans land.  Logan saw the opportunity and took off.  His speed was evident as he flew by a potential blocker at the 22 and did not encounter contact until he reached the 15 and ultimately ended a 23 yard run.  Great individual effort and speed by our start quarterback, Logan.

TERRELL NEWBY (#4) - RUNNING BACK

JERRY RODRIGUEZ (#54) - OFFENSIVE LINE

The Eagles after a long drive found themselves on the Arroyo Grande 2 yard line.  They used their standard short yardage set and had big Jerry Rodriguez (#54) line up as a blocking fullback.  Logan Scott (#4) lined up under center and on the snap handed the ball to Terrell “Skywalker” Newby (#34).  Terrell as expected launched at the 2 and flew into the end zone for a Chaminade touchdown.

KEVIN LEWALLYN (#5) - RECEIVER

Arroyo Grande lined up in punt formation.  They were kicking from their own 33 yard line.  Kevin Lewallyn (#5) waited deep to receive the ball for the Eagles, and rendered the punt a huge mistake with his incredible runback.  Kevin caught the ball at the Chaminade 34 and instantly bolted to his left.  Almost before you could blink he was at the 50 and had still not been touched.  He did not have human contact until reaching the Arroyo Grande 35 and went out at the 33 giving the punter a net zero yard punt.  Great play Kevin.  As you showed, there is no substitute for raw speed.

(Nicolette Cohen)

ANDREW CHEN (#64) - OFFENSIVE LINE

TAYLOR HINDY (#79) - OFFENSIVE LINE

BRENDEN MCKINNEY (#18) - TIGHT END

TERRELL NEWBY (#34) - RUNNING BACK

The Eagles lined up at the Arroyo Grande 43 yard line. Logan Scott (#4) lined up in the shotgun flanked by Terrell Newby (#34) on his right and Devon Lee (#25) on his left.  On the snap Logan handed the ball to Terrell running to his left with Devon as lead blocker.  As he went wide, Devon chip blocked the right defensive end to set him up for Andrew Chen (#64) to screen block him inside. Devon then went forward and blocked the cornerback out of the play on the outside.  Terrell turned the corner and ran between Devon and Andrew.  By the time he turned upfield Terrell saw the remains of the linebacker that Brenden McKinney (#18) destroyed lying on the 33 yard line.  A truly great block worth focusing on when you watch the clip the second time!  After Terrell ran by this he saw two defenders coming his way trailed by Taylor Hindy (#79).  What to do?  Duh, let them run by him, cut right and have Taylor take out the trailing defender.  Great heads-up running by Terrell and downfield blocking and effort by Taylor.  Terrell then cut left leaving a defender without shoes and sprinted for the end zone getting to the 1 yard line before being tackled.  Wow!!

ELIJAH DUNSTON (#1) - RECEIVER

TERRELL NEWBY (#34) - RUNNING BACK

The Eagles lined up at the Arroyo Grande 42 yard line.  Logan Scott (#4) handed the ball to his lone tailback, Terrell Newby (#34).  Terrell looked like he was headed into a crowded line of scrimmage, the made a beautiful jump cut to his right and headed wide.  Elijah Dunston (#1) saw this from his wide receiver spot and immediately rushed in to block or Terrell hitting the closest defender. Terrell used this block cutting right then left to follow Elijah.  By this time, Elijah had moved to the second defender and again made a nice block giving Terrell another lane.  The defenders were closing and two of them hit Terrell causing him to stumble.  In an amazing display of balance Terrell used one hand to steady himself and took off running again.  Elijah ran downfield to try for his third block on the same play, but wisely backed off to avoid a clip.  Terrell kept running and was not brought down until he reached he Arroyo Grande 13.  What a great combination play between Terrell and Elijah.

LOGAN SCOTT (#4) - QUARTERBACK

TAYLOR HINDY (#79) - OFFENSIVE LINE

TERRELL NEWBY (#34) - RUNNING BACK

The Eagles lined up at the Arroyo Grande 2 yard line.  They were in the typical short yardage lineup with Jerry Rodriguez (#54) as the blocking fullback and Terrell Newby (#34) deep as the tailback.  Logan Scott (#4) lined up under center and took the snap which he wisely pitched to Terrell.  Impressively, after pitching the ball, Logan turned and along with Taylor Hindy (#79) became Terrell’s lead blockers.  Terrell encountered some resistance at the 1 yard line but fought threw it and dove into the end zone for a Chaminade touchdown. Great work guys!

KEVIN ROCHE (#88) - RECEIVER

Kevin Roche (#88) is a wide receiver for the Chaminade Eagles. Roche, a spirited and ambitious young man, is currently a junior. He enjoys History and his favorite class was sophomore World History with Mrs. Sauter. He loves the "fact that the athletics are as good as the academic[s]."

When asked why he chose football out of all the sports Chaminade has to offer, Roche noted, "it is a sport which is fun, and also it brings together a groups of guys whose friendship grows throughout the year because of the things that we go through." According to Roche's teammates, the feeling is mutual when it comes to the family environment they are surrounded by and share.

The Eagles had a great season this year and Roche feels "that the team did excellent." Of course, there were still "some things that needed to be improved upon, but that's understandable," says Roche.

Roche's favorite moment of the season was defeating Notre Dame, which was also a huge win for the Eagles. He also feels that "Arroyo Grande posed the biggest challenge this year, and right below them was Serra." Roche will continue playing football for Chaminade next year, and he hopes to "accomplish a CIF title, undefeated in league, and possibly a state championship." He can also look forward to his favorite things about playing football for Chaminade: “the coaches and the support of the whole school each week of the season.”

ERIC HANOVER (#81) - RECEIVER

Eric Hanover (#81) is a junior wide receiver for the Chaminade Eagles football team.

Eric has found a new family at Chaminade.  He was overwhelmed with the community/family atmosphere that permeates the campus.  He said he feels like his Chaminade family is a second family.  While admitting this is a very unique feeling, not available at public schools and many other private schools, he feels that this provides a special experience he will carry with him long after his Chaminade days.

Eric is especially impressed with the caring attitute of his teachers that go beyond simply conveying information and actually take the time to make sure you understand not only the material being taught, but also how it applies in the real world.

His favorite subject is math and appropriately, his favorite class was Algebra II with Mr. Burke.  He hopes to attend UC Santa Barbara and major in mathematics.  It is too soon for him to decide on a profession, but he knows it will necessarily involve a branch of mathematics and its application in some specialized field.

Eric's devotion to the team and strong effort supporting the fantastic season and successes the Eagles enjoyed will surely help him in carrying forth the winning tradition and attitude in whatever pursuit he chooses.  We look forward to seeing another strong effort from Eric next year.

GAME SUMMARY

The Chaminade Eagles' football season came to an end this past friday night.  In a battle against the same team that put them out of the CIF semi-finals last year, Arroyo Grande, the Eagles unfortunately came up short.  In a devastating loss of 45-36, the Eagles had the lead throughout the first half but were outscored 31-15 in the second half.  Words could not describe the pain that the team was feeling after the loss, it was hard to believe that such a great season would be one without a CIF ring.  Although the Eagles lost, it was a milestone game for Terrell Newby who set the all-time school rushing record with 2,073 yards for the season.  Along with scoring 35 touchdowns in the season (4 against Arroyo Grande), Terrell was chosen as the Mission League offensive MVP.  Tal Dardashti was rewarded too for his efforts this season, named as the Mission League defensive MVP while Taylor Hindy was one of the most valuable linemen.  To add to the list of accomplishments, Andrew Chen, Logan Scott, Sam Hardy, Howard Lynch-Balani, Jacob Bowman, and Donovan Lee all were elected to the first team All Mission League.  Although it was a season that didn't bring Chaminade a CIF championship, it was an exciting team of athletes that never failed to impress and play their hearts out every minute.

INSIGHT

A YEAR IN REVIEW

This year, the Chaminade Eagles had a great season and proved that Chaminade will maintain a consistent football program that will continue to be a dominant force in both Mission League and CIF in the coming years.  With many of the younger players like Terrell Newby, who received the Most Valuable Offensive Player award in Mission League, and Pierce Milliken’s awe inspiring interception, Chaminade has many rising stars to look to for next year’s season.  Although our defensive line had a tough last game, they played fantastically in past games.  Especially during our homecoming game against St. Paul, where they prevented any opportunity for the Swordsmen to score even one point.  Our seniors also did a great job this year, carrying the team through many close victories and helping to contribute to the long term success of the team.  Overall, this year will definitely be a year to remember in Chaminade athletic history.  (Christian Lau).
